Thomas Hendy Fluen

was the father of WILLIAM HENRY FLUEN. He was born in Andover, Hampshire, England in the year 1873. His family started to move up to the north of England 1880/81. Thomas was a general labourer at first and became a coal merchant last few years before his death having been a joint owner of the coal firm later known as 'Russon's Coal and Coke Merchant' in Middlesbrough. He and his partner, Joseph Russon (1876-1951), must have started their business after 1911, as Census Records of that year are still stating that both had different jobs, then; Thomas as a mason labourer and Joseph Russon as a sawdust dealer. However Thomas' son, WILLIAM HENRY FLUEN, was used to tell that he started work age six delivering coal with his dad. Provided that it was like that the firm must have been set up about 1912/13, then.

"Separating Russon's Coal Merchant's yard from us (Remark: Settlement House Nursery School facing Newport Road, Middlesbrough) was a high brickwall behind which there was stabling for their eight huge draught horses and room for their flat coal carts. The coal deliverymen worked long hours and at the end of the day they would bring the horses and the coal-begrimmed rulleys back to this yard to be hosed down. In the summer evenings the coalmen had to walk their horses across the Newport Bridge to the rough, coarse-grassed pastureland on its northern bank. They then had to make the long way back, as they were not allowed onto the busses in their coal-blackened state ..."

Thomas Hendy Fluen died because of an accident 1916 and was buried Linthorpe Cemetery (D3879), Middlesbrough on
13. February.
While delivering coal he slipped on the ice and got run over by a horse and cart in Saltwells Road.

"I still remember the day, when my dad, WILLIAM HENRY FLUEN, came home from the solicitor after his mother, ELIZABETH ANN JOHNSON, had died. He was telling that he just found out that his dad was not only working for Joe Russon, but that he was in business with him and that he as his father's heir should have been a rich man - he said, "a millionaire" -, now. Besides he said something like that he would "not beg of anybody for a dead man's money" and that different "to them" he would make sure that nobody would be able to fight for, what he would leave some day. Also later he was used to reminisce about it quite often and adviced us in this context never to trust anybody concerning money, not even the family."

Looking back and knowing about in the meantime, who was related to who, his advice of them days - not to trust even family in monetary affairs - makes sense these days as Joseph Russon's son and successor, Albert Russon (1907-1984) was married to Billy's 1st cousin, Olive May Holland (1908-1975); a circumstance, which might have stopped him to insist on his legal rights and to waive a fortune in favour of his own family them days as 'family peace and unity' were some of the most important personal values to him.

THOMAS HENDY FLUEN was the eldest son of THOMAS HENDY (1851-1912) and ELIZA FLUEN (1855-1932). He married ELIZABETH ANN JOHNSON in Middlesbrough, Oct-Dec 1896.
Both had children:
*   Frederick Charles Fluen, born Oct-Dec 1897 and died Oct-Dec 1898
NOTE:
His identity is not clarified, because his birth certificate has not been requested. Theoretically, he could also have been the son of James Fluen and Sarah Balderston, means the 1st cousin of THOMAS HENDY FLUEN.
*   Florence Harriet A Fluen, born Jul-Sept 1899 and died Oct-Dec 1901
*   Violet Fluen, born 05. Nov 1901 and died 10. Mar 1968, married to Thomas William Thompson (1898-1967)
*   Tom Fluen, born Oct-Dec 1903 and died Jul-Sept 1905
*   WILLIAM HENRY FLUEN, born 06. Feb 1906 and died 27. June 1969, married to Mable Walker (1908-1973)
*   Ivy May Fluen, born Apr-Jun 1908 and died Jan-Mar 1965, married to Frederick Scurrah (1907-1965)
*   Dorothy Fluen, born Jul-Sept 1912 and died Oct-Dec 1912

(St Marys Parish Church, Andover, Hampshire, England)

Thomas hisself was born out of wedlock.
It can be only speculated about reasons, why his parents did not marry until later; it was perhaps Eliza's father, who did not give his parental consent to an earlier marriage as she was under-age, then. But as much as it is only an assumption it is certain though that THOMAS HENDY was Thomas' biological father. His birth got registered at first under his mother's maiden name though. After the legal acknowledgement by his father Thomas' surname should have altered normally to 'Fluen Hendy', then passing the surname 'Hendy' to his own children some day. But it looks like as if his new surname got registered wrongly by mistake so that the surname 'Fluen' got handed down to his offspring instead of.
NOTE:   When his son, Billy, had a dispute with his wife, Mable was used to finish the argument by taking the wind out of his sails by saying, "Who the fuck are you? A 'Hendy' or a 'Fluen'? You even don't know, who the hell you are!"
